Condemnation Explodes as Trump's Social Media Remarks on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Fierce Criticism
Individuals from across the partisan aisle and the entertainment industry are uniting to condemn former President Donald Trump for his remarks in the wake of the tragic passing of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Online Post
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Brentwood home, Trump took to his platform to label the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". The post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".
Police Update and Detention
Authorities have since announced the detention of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in relation to the incident. It is reported his bond was set at a substantial sum.
A Wave of Criticism from Public Figures
The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and scathing.
“What a vile and despicable statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the statements. Goldberg pointed to prior comments from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, asking, "Do you have no shame? Is it possible to get any worse?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "This is a sick man."
Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."
Criticism from His Own Party
Some Republican lawmakers also voiced disapproval.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". She also mentioned struggles with addiction and mental health within families.
Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disgraceful" considering the circumstances. He openly dared members in his party to defend the comments.
Reiner's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. During a past interview, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of autocracy should Trump return to power.
"We see autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we fall, there’s a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "absolute horror" and denounced violence for political ends without reservation following the killing of another individual.
A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously recounted the story of the session, mentioning Trump's request for "special hairspray" while posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
