Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police shared surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries according to reports.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a baby.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder issue that required surgery.
He signed with New York as a free agent in March and was projected as a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
