Meteorologists have indicated a chilly beginning to the new year, with snow likely throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants have been told to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Plans Continue Amid Alerts

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay festivities are planned to go ahead, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," noted the Met Office.

Displays Under Clear but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks shows, with dry conditions and clear skies. The mercury are due to be low, meaning extra layers vital, according to forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Broad Advisories for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, weather warnings are active across Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• People have been urged to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are likely on the transport network.

Temperatures Forecast to Plummet Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are expected to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Public Health Advisories Released

At the same time, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities stated this signified the weather was expected to trigger significant impacts across medical and care provision. This includes a likely increase in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.
