Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a significant honors show nears, one notices an outcry to include of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories actually cover many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
