The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have called a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll is 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were transported to hospital.
The victims are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the individuals who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Described as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She told the moments before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
