Three Lions Coach Shares The Approach: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.
In the past, Anthony Barry competed at a lower division club. Currently, he is focused supporting the head coach win the World Cup next summer. His path from player to coach commenced through volunteering with the youth team. He recalls, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he fell in love with it. He realized his destiny.
Staggering Ascent
Barry's progression has been remarkable. Starting as Paul Cook’s assistant, he established a name for innovative drills and strong interpersonal abilities. His roles at clubs took him to elite sides, while also serving in roles with national teams with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with legends including world-class talents. Now, with England, it’s full-time, the peak as he describes it.
“Dreams are the starting point … But I’m a believer that obsession can move mountains. You dream big then you break it down: ‘How can we achieve it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ Our goal is the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We have to build a systematic approach that allows us for optimal success.”
Obsession with Details
Passion, particularly on fine points, defines Barry’s story. Working every hour all the time, he and Tuchel push hard at comfort zones. Their methods involve player analysis, a plan for hot conditions for the finals abroad, and fostering teamwork. Barry emphasizes “Team England” and rejects terms like “international break”.
“This isn't a vacation or a break,” Barry notes. “We had to build something where players are eager to join and, secondly, they feel so stretched that returning to club duty feels easier.”
Driven Leaders
Barry describes himself and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate every aspect of the game,” Barry affirms. “We strive to own the whole ground and that’s what we spend many of our days on. We must not just to keep up of changes but to surpass them and innovate. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And to clarify complicated matters.
“We have 50 days with the players prior to the World Cup. We must implement a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. It’s to take it from idea to information to understanding to action.
“To build a methodology enabling productivity during the limited time, we have to use the entire 500 days we'll have from when we started. When the squad is away, we have to build relationships with them. We must dedicate moments on the phone with them, observing them live, understand them, connect with them. If we just use the 50 days, we have no chance.”
World Cup Qualifiers
Barry is preparing for the final pair in the qualifying campaign – versus Serbia in London and away to Albania. The team has secured their place at the finals by winning all six games and six clean sheets. However, they won't relax; on the contrary. Now is the moment to strengthen the squad's character, to gain more impetus.
“We are both certain that the style of play should represent the best aspects of English football,” Barry says. “The physicality, the adaptability, the robustness, the integrity. The England jersey needs to be highly competitive but light to wear. It should feel like a cape instead of heavy armour.
“To ensure it's effortless, it's crucial to offer a system that lets them to play freely similar to weekly matches, that feels natural and allows them to take the handbrake off. They must be stuck less in thinking and focus more on action.
“There are emotional wins you can get as a coach in attack and defense – building from the defense, attacking high up. However, in midfield of the pitch, those 24 metres, we believe play has stagnated, especially in England's top flight. Everybody has so much information currently. They know how to set up – defensive shapes. We are focusing to speed up play across those 24 metres.”
Drive for Growth
His desire to get better is all-consuming. While training for the top coaching badge, he was worried regarding the final talk, as his cohort featured big names like Lampard and Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he sought out difficult settings imaginable to practise giving them. Such as Walton jail locally, and he trained detainees during an exercise.
Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, with his thesis – about dead-ball situations, for which he analysed thousands of throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard was among those won over and he recruited the coach to his team with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it said plenty that the club got rid of virtually all of his coaches while keeping Barry.
His replacement at Chelsea took over, within months, they claimed the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry stayed on in the setup. But when Tuchel re-emerged in Germany, he brought Barry over away from London and back alongside him. The FA view them as a partnership similar to Southgate and Holland.
